Mario Ballesteros

Mario is an independent editor, researcher, and writer based in Barcelona. He holds a Bachelor Degree in International Affairs from El Colegio de Mexico and a Masters degree in Architecture and Urban Culture from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC). Prior to living in Barcelona, he conducted research with LAR/Fernando Romero and with the Urban Design Group in Mexico City.

He has recently worked as a curator for the Design Hub in Barcelona, and is a regular collaborator at Actar Publishers, where he co-edited the latest issue of the Verb Series (Crisis), and is currently working on two books that examine informality and low-cost housing. He is also a regular contributor at Where, a collective blog on urbanism. Mario's latest interest is exploring alternatives and defining strategies for the production and dissemination of digital content.

Jose Zabala

With a dual degree in architecture (ESARQ-UIC with honors) and technical architecture (UPC), Jose began his professional experience in the office of Roberto Ercilla where he oversaw the development of the competition proposal for a mixed-use office and housing complex, as well as an award-winning design for a 190-unit housing. As a senior architect, Jose has worked with Carlos Ferreter & Asociados (OAB) to develop and realize the design proposal for a 35-hectare site in Bodrum Turkey (Capital Partners), a 75,000 m2 mixed use proposal for Tirana, Albania and most recently for a large-scale urban design and architectural proposal in Doha, Qatar.

In addition to his work with OAB, Jose is currently responsible for the design and construction of a twenty-unit housing project in the Carmel neighborhood of Barcelona, the winning entry of a competition for the redesign and rehabilitation of the site of a tunnel infrastructure collapse in 2005.

Jose has taught studio design at the ELISAVA, lectured at the UPC, and been interviewed by the national press regarding his work in Carmel. He is currently a professor of architecture design in the International University of Catalonia (UIC).
